The Red River Flood 2009: Personal Story
March 28th 2009 01:01
Many of you may know that I live on the Minnesota/North Dakota border. What you may not know is that the border between the two states in my neck o’ the woods is the Red River, which is about 2 blocks from my front door, and is getting closer by the hour.
To read more of my personal story and view pictures right outside my door, please visit either of the following links:
Wild Weather: Red River Racing Toward My Doorstep (Full Story, Photos, and additional resources)
Red River Flood: Right Outside My Door (Full Story, Photos, and Video)
To Give some perspective on the way the water has risen, below is a picture of an obelisk that was built to memorialize the tragic 1997 flood in Grand Forks, which devastated the city. The marker indicates the level at which the river crested in '97.
And, in the image below you will see the most recent view of the same Obelisk, taken from a webcam at the bridge over the river. This is a close a view as one will get, as the area is completely blocked off and inaccessible.

This Obelisk sits atop a concrete platform overlooking the River. It is situated a significant distance above the Red River's banks.

You'll notice that the water is rapidly reaching the top of the Obelisk. Something we hoped we'd never see.
