Scenes that Changed Our Lives
July 20th 2008 10:28
I think it is fair to say that many of us can point to a scene or quote from a movie or book that moved us so much that they sort of always just stayed with us.
I personally have a laundry list of quotes that just stay in my head. Some are funny, some are sad, but most of them stay with me because they inspired me in some way. One of my favorites is a quote from "Watership Down" which is:
"All the world will be your enemy, Prince of a Thousand enemies. And when they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you."
This quote may seem a bit morbid, but it resonates with me, especially when it feels like the odds are stacked against me, and nothing seems to be going right. I think of this quote, and I become motivated to outrun and out maneuver all of the obstacles and challenges that chase me. I don't know, it just hits that chord, you know?
A more recent quote is from the movie "P.S. I Love You." It takes place during a flashback scene where Holly and Gerry first meet, and she is talking to him about her art. She can't really define what it is that she does, or what she wants to do...only that it is crucial to her to be creative. She says:
"Just create something... new, and there it is, and its you, out in the world, out side of you and you can look at it, or hear it, or read it, or feel it... and you know a little more about... you. A little bit more than anyone else does.."
I have this quote written down near my PC and I often reread it as I work on my novel. It serves as great inspiration.
What are some of the quotes or scenes that have inspired you? Are there any stand out as life changing? I'd love to hear about it.

Swannie, I really always dreamed that one day, when I got married, "All I Ask of You" from Phantom would be my wedding song. It does sound like vows in a way.
Well, it didn't work out that way, but the words of that song still really mean a lot to me.
I like all of the Batman quotes. I just saw the Dark Knight, and I love the message at the end. I won't ruin it for those who haven't seen it. But Superhero movies really do have a lot of wonderful morality questions that resonate with people.
I forgot to mention that some of my favorite quotes are from the movie "Dream for an Insomniac." It has been one of my faves forever. Here are a couple of the best:
"Anything less than mad, passionate, extraordinary love is a waste of your time."
" I know that if you don't make an effort to be happy you won't be happy, I know that theres a point when your maybe laters become too late. If you only dream when your asleep then when you wake up theres still nothing there."

I can't think of any now but it always amazes me when I see or hear one liners whilst reading or watching classics, its like, is that where that came from....guess thats why they are called classics.....Dickens is probably on that springs to mind, his stuff is littered with one-liners that have stood the test of time.

I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

gosh, that's a good one i often employ on the soundtrack in my own head, as i slog about my job and life.
(for me it's a load of personal mythologizing and simpering ego-carressing that helps me get over the rough spots...)
still, i think it would be a hoot to utter those as my own last words (though i'd prefer to come up w/something original, eventually).
thanks for that JohnDoe!
