Perez Hilton Instigates More Cyber Bullying
April 1st 2009 18:39
I struggled with whether or not to even write about this, because I don't wish to bring any more attention to the loathsome human being that is Perez Hilton than he already has.
However, I cannot leave it alone. If more people take the time to look at the damage that Perez is doing to young people, perhaps we can at least get him to stop. I have no illusions that Perez is going to wane in popularity, or that my humble site will have any major impact, but what we're going for here is a snowball effect. If you agree with what I am about to say, please pass it on.
You may recall a previous Beta Girl post about Perez Hilton's exploitation of a minor, which lead to online harassment. Here is a link to that post:
Perez Hilton's Irresponsible Behavior Ignites Harassment of Teenager
I wrote emails to Perez (Mario Lavandeira) asking him to remove the post and to encourage his readers not to engage in bullying. I also contacted YouTube about the cyber bullying that was taking place. I was informed by You Tube that even though the teen's life had been threatened via comments, they wouldn't remove the post unless the target of the attacks issued his own complaint. Perez didn't reply.
So, to sum up. Perez won't speak out about cyber bullying, because he is a bully himself. He's the instigator. You Tube won't address the harassment of a minor unless the juvenile requests it himself. Great.
So, just as I'd begun to put this issue behind me, Perez strikes again. I received an email from a reader directing me to Hilton's latest offense. And a real offense it is. This time, Perez posted a You Tube video of a young girl singing a Taylor Swift song. He urges his readers to go check it out. The problem? The young girl is clearly developmentally disabled, and a minor amount of research on her You Tube page shows that quite clearly. It appears that she lives in a Group Home environment, and just likes to sing.

She is an innocent. There are questions that should be raised about whether or not her caregiver should have allowed her to post the video in the first place, but Perez is the real demon here. What kind of a man encourages people to make fun of a challenged youth? Especially when he has MILLIONS of daily followers.
I'm not going to link to his site this time, but if you'd like to see exactly what I'm talking about, you can go to Perez Hilton's blog and it should be on the second or third page, I believe. In the Headline he asks if she is the next Tina Chen, another unfortunate that Perez enjoys making fun of.
The trouble is, when Perez defends himself against these types of criticisms, he simply uses the public domain defense. He says that since these items are already out there, no one can stop him from posting. He'll also readily point out that he makes no rude comments himself, he only directs his readers to the page, and they can make up their own minds.
Well, make up their minds they have. Here is a sampling of some of the girl's most recent You Tube comments:
"urgggh....wheres the gun & bullets i gotta finish her with my encore HAHA!!!"
"You look old enough to understand that you are talentless and god-fearing ugly. A fire, you should go play in one"
"I FUCKING VOMITED"
"........i actually want you to quit life. thanks"
These are only a few of the responses. At the time of this posting the video in question had received 207,467 views. I'm sure that the insults and threats will keep coming, all courtesy of the attention given by Perez Hilton. Her video is currently listed as #4 on his most emailed list.
Perez may be free to post these links, as the video is a part of public domain. That doesn't make it right, and it doesn't make it safe. If you feel as I do, please join me in telling Perez Hilton exactly what we think of this type of behavior. Perhaps one email won't do the trick, but if we can flood him, perhaps he'll feel forced to take down the offending video, or at least refrain from doing it again.
