Paul Potts: Inspirational Story of a Salesman turned Singing Sensation
April 16th 2009 07:10
In my last post, I highlighted Susan Boyle and her magnificent audition on Britain's Got Talent.
Well, being unfamiliar with the show Britain's Got Talent up until that point, I had no idea that a CD in my collection was the result of a similar "Cinderella" story from the same talent show.
Paul Potts auditioned for Britain's Got Talent in 2007. He was a down on his luck cell phone salesman who was nearing bankruptcy when he saw an advertisement recruiting people to audition for the show.
Paul flipped a coin. Heads he auditions, tails he stays home. The heads up coin sealed his fate, and he sent off his application.
On the night of his big audition, he shyly and awkwardly shuffled himself out on stage. The judges rolled their eyes, and audience members snickered at the sight of this disheveled man who claimed he wanted to be an opera singer. According to Paul from his web site, “When I stepped on to the stage the crowd were baying for blood. The act before had been a disaster. As I walked to the mark, in my £35 suit, I just wanted to turn around and run away.”
But he didn't run. Instead, the gentleman who'd been bullied as a child and struggled to fit in all his life turned in the following performance:
Well, Mr. Potts went on to win that year, and since then has become a sensation across the globe. His debut album sold over 3 million copies, he went on tour and sold out entire stadiums, and even performed for the Queen of England.
This inspirational story melts my heart. I had no idea that the CD I love to listen to as I sit here and type had such an amazing story behind it.
May we all learn to hold our heads high and reach for our dreams. Congratulations to Paul Potts, good luck to Susan Boyle, and thank you to both of them for having the courage to show the world that dreams can come true. Not just for the posh, the beautiful, and the privileged, but for any one of us. If you have a talent, a dream, an ambition, or desire...go for it. Life's too short to hang your head in fear and doubt.
