IMDb's Starmeter Ranks the top Stars of 2008

December 19th 2008 01:33
Some of our absolute favorites made the STARMeter Top 25 of 2008 this year. And a few of our featured Alphas even made the top 10!

According to the site these rankings are not based on box office income, but rather from the searching habits on IMDb.com of over 57 million users.

“The Starmeter list is a true gauge of what’s hot in pop culture based on actual user interest and visits to a star’s page,” said Keith Simanton, managing editor, IMDB.com, in a statement.

Here are the top 10!

1. Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp
IMDb: Mr. Depp now claims the top spot on the IMDb's STARmeter for the fifth year in a row -- even though his biggest appearances of the year were on the red carpet of the Oscars (where he was nominated for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street) and at the MTV Movie Awards, where he snagged trophies for both Sweeney Todd and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. And fans couldn't stop talking about his upcoming roles in Michael Mann's Public Enemies (as John Dillinger) and Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (as the Mad Hatter), as well as salivating at the concept of him playing The Riddler in the next Batman flick. Check back with us next year to see if that comes to fruition -- we're sure he'll be somewhere at the top of this list again!

2. Christian Bale

Christian Bale
IMDb: The star of The Dark Knight found unexpected controversy on the opening of his blockbuster flick in London, where he was arrested on charges of assaulting his mother and sister. The charges were later dropped, as The Dark Knight went on to become the second-highest grossing film after Titanic.

3. Heath Ledger

Heath Ledger
IMDb: His tragic and untimely death by accidental overdose generated what's arguably the year's biggest pop culture story, and turned his last completed film, The Dark Knight, from an expected summer hit into a massive screen sensation. Will a posthumous Oscar follow?

4. Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt
IMDb: In addition to the massive press attention he received this year, Mr. Pitt found favor with a group that's often eluded him: film critics, who took a shine to his comic turn in Burn After Reading and started talking Oscar for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

5. Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie
IMDb: You can't turn around in a supermarket without seeing her on a magazine cover, and she played the press like a Stradivarius this year, giving birth to twins in France and doing the press rounds for Changeling, which may snag her a second Oscar nomination.

6. Shia LaBeouf

Shia LaBeouf
IMDb: The It Boy of 2008 chased down villains and treasure alongside Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, broke his hand filming Transformers 2, weathered an arrest scandal, and still had another flick come out this year (Eagle Eye). Busy much?

7. Megan Fox

Megan Fox
IMDb: No longer playing second banana to robots, Ms. Fox became a paparazzi fixture and buzz-worthy babe this year, snagging the lead in Diablo Cody's next flick, Jennifer's Body, and walking away with the otherwise-forgettable comedy How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.

8. Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart
IMDb: Critics gave her lots of attention for her sensitive, stand-out performance in Into the Wild, but the population at large shreiked at her turn as the teen-girl heroine of the moment, Isabella Swan, in the highly anticipated vampire romance Twilight.

9. Will Smith

Will Smith
IMDb: Coming off yet another massive hit with I Am Legend, Smith turned the love-it-or-hate-it superhero flick Hancock into a major box office hit, and courted Oscar yet again with the redemptive drama Seven Pounds.

10. Gerard Butler!!

Gerard Butler
IMDb: The 300 star continued his winning ways, as P.S. I Love You became a surprise DVD fave among the ladies, and RockNRolla proved he still had what it takes to hang out with the rabble-rousing guys. Next up: it's rom-com fun in The Ugly Truth.

The rest of the list is as follows:

11. Tom Cruise
12. Miley Cyrus
13. Jessica Alba
14. Zac Efron
15. Leonardo DiCaprio
16. Scarlett Johansson
17. Ellen Page
18. James McAvoy
19. Keira Knightley
20. Mark Wahlberg
21. Natalie Portman
22. Edward Norton
23. Hayden Panettiere
24. Jason Statham (look for a Beta Girl feature on this Alpha coming soon!)
25. Ryan Reynolds

What do you think about this year's list? Happy with the results? Any surprises?
