Beta Girls Night
March 31st 2008 06:17
The importance of gathering with your fellow Betas for a night out cannot be overstated. We thrive on our fellowship, be it virtually or in person. It is all too easy to wrapped up in your own pursuits, and a break from it all is necessary.
This Beta Girl is no exception. This evening, I got together with my best Beta, and we decided to have a Girls' Night In. We went out and rented some movies, loaded up on goodies, and plopped ourselves in front of the TV.
The movie that we chose for our evening was "The Jane Austen Book Club". And, may I say, it was a perfect flick for a Girls Night.
In this film, we join five women and one man who decide to start an all Jane Austen book club. Each person chose one Austen classic, and each meeting they would host a discussion of the book of their choice.
Toward the beginning of the movie, as we are introduced the the individual characters and their lives, we find that they are all struggling with their own personal torments. From divorce, to lonliness, to abandonment, and marital frustration, each woman has her own story.
Through the discussions, they relate their own lives the the characters in Jane Austen's books. In fact, the women themselves are all based on Jane Austen's heroines, and if you are at all familiar with her writing, you will pick up on this right away.
Myself and my fellow Beta greatly enjoyed this movie, and stopping it once to make an ice cream run notwithstanding, we laughed and cried and related to the women of the film.
Whether or not you have read Austen, after seeing this film, you will want to. But, prepare yourselves to be tested by the emotions that arise. After all, as they say in the film, "No Rules, No Fear ~ Reading Jane Austen Is A Freaking Minefield".
