Beta Girl's Ultimate Romantic Music Guide
May 24th 2009 04:26
As you all know by now, Beta Girl is in love with love. Whether it is in film, real life, or in fantasy, I live for all things romance. Below, you will find a list of my favorite romantic music, in no particular order. Guaranteed to make you more that a little amorous.
Tower of Learning - Rufus Wainwright
Im looking for the tower of learning
Im looking for the copious prize
I saw it in your eyes what Im looking for
I saw it in your eyes what Im looking for
This may just be the most romantic song ever. It gets me every time I listen to it.
Sadly, the video below leaves out the first verse, listed above, but you'll get the rest of the song. Lovely.
Lifeboat - Nathaniel Merriweather
But it seems there was some other plan
One I don't care to understand
In the refuge of these foreign arms
I could find your holy land
I don't know what it is about this one...but it makes me want to do it. Yes IT. From the album, Lovage: Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By, if only I could get my old man to like it as much as I do! Sigh.
End of the World - Matt Alber
Don’t you want to fall, don’t you want to fly
Don’t you want to be dangled over
The edge of this aching romance
If it’s gonna end, then I wanna know
That we squeezed out every moment
But if there’s nothing left can you tell me why
That it is you’re holding onto me
Like it’s the end of the world
End of the World is one of those songs that makes me cry every single time I hear it. Every time....gosh I'm crying right now.
Hunter's Kiss - Rasputina
A romantic scene,
From a lullaby,
In a clearing green
Where his eyes met mine.
I was froze in motion,
Oh, his bow was raised,
Then the fleeting notion-
That my life he’d save.
This is one of my favorite songs ever. I cannot express how much I love this little gem. Rasputina is an awesome band, more people should listen to them. Now, is this a love song? Maybe not, but it has a certain dark romance about it. You'll have to forgive the Disney animation in the video for the song. Just close your eyes and listen.
Lover You Should've Come Over - Jeff Buckley
It's never over
My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It's never over
all my riches for her smiles when I slept so soft against her...
It's never over
All my blood for the sweetness of her laughter...
It's never over
She's a tear that hangs inside my soul forever...
My favorites seem to have a bit of a melancholy feel to them. This one is no exception. The lyrics listed above are among my favorite song lyrics of all time. Just pulls my still beating heart from my chest.
Your Song - Elton John
If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a travelling show
I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you
A classic. So simple and so sweet. I hope you don't mind...I hope you don't mind...that I put down in words...how much I love this song. It's ok, you can groan. I did too.
The Story - Brandi Carlile
Is hiding the words that don't come out
And all of my friends who think that I'm blessed
They don't know my head is a mess
No, they don't know who I really am
And they don't know what I've been through like you do
And I was made for you...
Chills...wow.... Every time I hear this song, I just want to scream. In a good way. Brandi Carlile has the most amazing voice. I love her. I want to be her. And lyrically, this song is so poignant. It can be interpreted in a variety of ways. I hadn't heard it in a very long time, but it was on my radio as I was driving this week, and I just bawled.
Total Eclipse Of The Heart - Bonnie Tyler
We can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time
I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark
We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
I really need you tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Once in a while, there is a timeless song that just gets inside your soul and won't let go. As silly as it may sound, Total Eclipse of the Heart is one of those songs for me. Bonnie Tyler's passionate vocals mixed with powerful lyrics makes for a real good old fashioned love song. The kind that oozes the agony of love and loss and lust. I will never grow weary of this one. And then there is the fabulously creepy video that only the 80's could have created.
Come What May - Moulin Rouge
Suddenly the world seems such a perfect place
Suddenly it moves with such a perfect grace
Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste
It all revolves around you
Oh kill me now. This is the perfect love song. I don't care if you liked the movie or not. It is a brilliantly romantic and heart wrenching song. It's the kind of song that could actually make me swoon.
Galway Girl - Steve Earle
We were halfway there when the rain came down
Of a day -I-ay-I-ay
And she asked me up to her flat downtown
Of a fine soft day -I-ay-I-ay
And I ask you, friend, what's a fella to do
'Cause her hair was black and her eyes were blue
So I took her hand and I gave her a twirl
And I lost my heart to a Galway girl
What a fantastic song! Period. Makes me want to dance. I think I will!
First Day of my Life - Bright Eyes
Remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning
And I thought it was strange you said everything changed
You felt as if you'd just woke up
And you said “this is the first day of my life
I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you
But now I don’t care I could go anywhere with you
And I’d probably be happy
There is something so sorrowful and soulful about Connor Oberst's voice. It works for love songs, sad songs, and angry songs. In the case of First Day of My Life, you can hear the innocence and pain of love that most of us can relate to. I love it!
Well, there you have it. There are probably a million more songs that I could come up with, but these are some of the best of the best. What are your favorite love songs?

I had never seen the video clip to Total Eclipse of the Heart, even though it's one of my favourite songs. Well, somewhere in my top 100 songs anyway. I am so glad you included that.

I don't know many of these songs at all, apart from Jeff, Elton and Bonnie ... I must be living under a rock.
I'll have to give it some thought to come up with a list of my own ... But I agree that the best are usually melancholic.
I love that black and white image at the top of the post though!

I'm being perfectly honest "Closer" by NIN almost made this list...but I though better of it! Oddly I find it to be a kind of romantic song in a twisted way.

it is natures way, and if you are a female pig who does not allow this to happen you are A-
sexpig-ualand some people tell me the pig who wrote this is not a misogynist or a homophobe . . . riiiiiight
at least Trent Reznor can acknowledge he is talking about fixation and obsession

If you dislike Lazarus' comments so much, then why do you spend so much time reading them, quoting them and linking to them? Especially as you seem to have trouble actually understanding them. Lazarus did not say having sex like a farm animal brings someone closer to God.

feel free to not address me at all in future, you have already explained your general outlook that the person pointing it out is worse that the person doing it, a sentiment which i find appalling
oops i quoted again . . . accepts the way the world was made . . . sounds like god to me
oops there i go again, i just cant help myself, low impulse control
youve made it pretty clear that you actually cant understand these sort of comments, i cant decide if you are playing dumb or you simply are dumb, but either way i do not know how you have the audacity to speak to me at all when you lend approval to maligning people for their sexuality
if you like being disrespected and degraded as a woman thats your choice, but you are way out of line to impose your ideals of submissive virtues on to me

Oops, there I go addressing you again. Low impulse control. I didn't actually realise it was such a terrible thing to speak to someone who disagreed with me. The question still remains though. Why do you read Lazarus' comments if you find them so distasteful? And for that matter, why do you read my blog, as you dislike my views so much you don't even want me to address you?
You are making a whole heap of assumptions here about me, with absolutely no basis for them. Just because I do not think someone is a misogynist does not mean I like being disrespected and degraded as a woman.
And where exactly did I try to impose my submissive virtues onto you? Not to mention the other question of why would you think I was submissive anyway?

you may have noticed i write on this network and im pretty active in the community, if something is on homepage im going to read it, i dont bury my head in the sand and pretend things arent happening when they are, and im not going to curtail my blogging activities in order to accommodate for a sexually frustrated and repressed pig
i came to this post to speak to my friend Nat, and until you rudely interrupted thats what i was doing, having a conversation with Nat, it does not require your imput, so have a bit of common decency and speak when youre spoken to on third party blogs
ive never had a problem with your religious views, and have enjoyed your blog until recently when you began actively participating in Davids bullying campaign against me
if you or "Lazarus" dont want people to read your misogynistic views then dont publish them, but dont be surprised when women voice their disgust . . . the onus is not on me to stifle my reaction or cut back my reading
if youve got something to say to me write it on your own blog or mine, but dont start conflicts on third party posts, that David-method of "interacting" with people has been tried and failed, it pisses people off, things get deleted, someone gets banned . . . you dont want to find yourself on the wrong end of a Purge now do you?

I am sorry for taking the comments in your blog in a direction you probably did not want them to go in. It's just Morgan brought up Lazarus and said something I considered to be untrue. I find it hard to simply sit back and say nothing in those situations. I did not realise it would be considered interrupting to comment on a blog where I made the first comment.
Hi Morgan,
I am sorry you feel I have actively participated in a bullying campaign against you. It was definitely not my intention to make you feel bullied in any way. To be honest, I feel a bit bullied too. Not helped by the fact that you have tried to browbeat me into accepting your opinion, told me I can't even speak to you, said I want to be degraded and disrespected as a woman, called me dumb and are now warning me that I might get banned.
Once again, I apologise to both of you.
