Alpha Movie Review-P.S. I Love You
May 5th 2008 08:15
Warning, do not watch this film without an ample supply of Kleenex!
I first saw P.S. I Love You on opening weekend. It was a long wait for the film's release, and finally it had arrived. And I was NOT disappointed, although, I was a bit surprised by just how much I loved it!
P.S. I Love You is a movie based on the book of the same name by Cecelia Ahern. It was billed in its promotion as a romantic comedy, however, I would say it is primarily a dramatic film about a woman who has lost the love of her life and tries to cope in the world without him. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of funny parts, and lots of romance, but it is mainly a top notch tear jerker.
The main characters of the movie are Gerry and Holly Kennedy, played by Gerard Butler and Hillary Swank. They are a married couple who are desperately in love, but tragedy strikes as Gerry dies at the beginning of the film of a brain tumor. Holly falls into a deep depression, locking herself in her apartment where she feels as though she can still feel Gerry's presence around her.
On her 30th birthday, she finds that her departed husband had planned to have a series of letters that he wrote before he passed away delivered to her periodically, to help her deal with her grief. Each letter has a bit of advice for her, and through the letters and with the help of her friends, she navigates her way through the pain of being widowed so early in life.
Reviews of this movie are mixed, and many have pointed out that this movie is a departure for Swank, and that she can't seem to pull off a role in a movie of this kind. I, on the other hand, found her to be perfect for the role, as it called for her not only to be funny, but to be believable in her sorrow. Gerard Butler is wonderful (Ofcourse!) in the role of Gerry, and makes you melt in the flashback scenes of their lives together.
The cast is rounded out by Kathy Bates as Holly's mother, Gina Gershon and Lisa Kudrow as the faithful best friends, Harry Connick Jr as Holly's potential new love interest, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as an Irishman Holly meets while vacationing in Gerry's hometown. All are great in their roles.

I've now seen this film several times, and I still cry from beginning to end. I would highly recommend it to everyone. Such an underrated Gem! I would also add that it has a fantastic soundtrack.
And, we wouldn't be Beta Girl if we didn't point out the wonderful scenes with Gerard Butler! In particular, look forward to him singing Karaoke, playing guitar shirtless, and even a sexy and silly striptease! Watch below for a fun interview with Gerry talking about the film. And then, if you haven't already, please go see it immediately! The DVD comes out in the U.S. on May 6th, but this Beta Girl got her hands on an advance copy, and I have only one complaint. The lack of Special Features was a bit of a bummer. Hopefully a Special Edition set will be released with the interviews and Featurettes that we were looking forward to seeing.
Enjoy!
